Low-Cost Airborne Thermal Sensors for Animal Monitoring

چکیده

Background Vertebrate pests are a major environmental and economic threat in New Zealand. One of the species that has high potential threat is possum (Trichosurus vulpecula). The direct environmental impacts of possum are in defoliation of native flora and predation of native birds (Montague 2000). The direct economic impact is a result of their role as vectors of bovine tuberculosis (Tb). New Zealand spends $70m annually on possum control, largely undertaken by the Animal Health Board (for Tb management), Regional Councils (for plant, animal and environmental protection) and Department of Conservation (for environmental protection).

Low Cost UAV-based Remote Sensing for Autonomous Wildlife Monitoring

In recent years, developments in unmanned aerial vehicles, lightweight on-board computers, and low-cost thermal imaging sensors offer a new opportunity for wildlife monitoring. In contrast with traditional methods now surveying endangered species to obtain population and location has become more cost-effective and least time-consuming. In this paper, a low-cost UAV-based remote sensing platform...

Development of a Cost-Effective Airborne Remote Sensing System for Coastal Monitoring

Coastal lands and nearshore marine areas are productive and rapidly changing places. However, these areas face many environmental challenges related to climate change and human-induced impacts. Space-borne remote sensing systems may be restricted in monitoring these areas because of their spatial and temporal resolutions. In situ measurements are also constrained from accessing the area and obt...

Airborne Optical and Thermal Remote Sensing for Wildfire Detection and Monitoring

For decades detection and monitoring of forest and other wildland fires has relied heavily on aircraft (and satellites). Technical advances and improved affordability of both sensors and sensor platforms promise to revolutionize the way aircraft detect, monitor and help suppress wildfires. Sensor systems like hyperspectral cameras, image intensifiers and thermal cameras that have previously bee...

Remote Sensing of Vegetation from Uav Platforms Using Lightweight Multispectral and Thermal Imaging Sensors

Current high spatial resolution satellite sensors lack the spectral resolution required for many quantitative remote sensing applications and, given the limited spectral resolution, they only allow the calculation of a limited number of vegetation indices and remote sensing products. Additionally if short revisit time is required for management applications, the cost of high resolution imagery ...

Airborne Multispectral Digital Camera and Video Sensors: a Critical Review of System Designs and Applications

Airborne multispectral remote sensor development based on low cost solid-state video and digital cameras has proceeded rapidly in the past ten years to a level where such sensors now compete with larger more sophisticated sensors in the commercial mapping and scientific research contract marketplace. For many organizations, development or leasing of such sensors is a cost-effective and advantag...
